Aims

Smart Coatings & AI (SCAI) is an international, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal published quarterly online by Scilight Press. It is committed to fostering the exploration of innovative coating materials and technologies by disseminating cutting-edge fundamental and applied research, with a strong emphasis on incorporating artificial intelligence into coating research and on developing smart/functional coatings. We aim to provide a robust platform for scientists, researchers, and engineers to share their findings and to enhance the understanding of coating technologies and their crucial importance within various applications. 

Scope

The scope of Smart Coatings & AI (SCAI) encompasses (but is not limited to) the following topics:

  • Innovative Materials: Delving into the development and application of novel materials for coatings that push the boundaries of functionality and efficiency.
  • Design and Synthesis: Material selection, formulation design, structural optimization, performance requirements, preparation process, synthesis methods, environmental adaptability and economic considerations.
  • Interface Processes: Electrochemistry, corrosion, wearing, adhesion, wettability, (bio)compatibility, interactions, interface reactions, multi-scale interfaces, etc.
  • Coating Preparation Processes: Advances in coating preparation processes including spraying, dipping, self-assembly, electrodeposition and chemical vapor deposition.
  • Material Characterization: Advanced analytical methods for the characterization of coatings.
  • Property/Performance Analysis and Characterization: Durability, degradation, high-temperature resistance, wear resistance and corrosive resistance.
  • Functional and Smart Coatings: Stimuli-responsive coatings, reversible thermochromic coatings, hydrophilic/hydrophobic switching coatings, self-healing coatings, self-cleaning coatings, pH-responsive coatings, hydrophobic/superhydrophobic coatings, conductive coatings, antimicrobial coatings, antifouling coatings.
  • Application of AI in Coating Research: Prediction and optimization of coating materials, optimization of coating formulations and preparation processes, prediction and analysis of surface and interface phenomena, research on reaction mechanisms, simulation and evaluation of coating performances, diagnosis and control of coating flaw, and screening and designing of green and eco-friendly coating materials. 
  • AI Technology in Coating Research: Data-driven coating research, machine learning, deep learning, big data and cloud computing, computational intelligence, machine vision and image/signal processing, neural networks and fuzzy systems, and molecular simulation and computation.
  • Applications and Challenges: Providing in-depth analyses of how novel materials and technologies are being integrated into industrial practices (aerospace, automotive, electronics, energy and healthcare) and the challenges of coating applications.
  • Sustainability: Eco-friendly and biodegradable coatings that align with environmental sustainability.
